Vitamins in Skin Care Products

In 1933, a statement was released involving the “study of vitamins” and the “constant development of new and novel methods for their administration.”  The statement went on, “One of these is the application of ointments or creams rich in vitamin containing substances directly to the skin.” It followed that this practice would help to correct, “mild skin morbidities, large pores, lines, wrinkles, sallowness, etc.” Twenty years later, Helena Rubenstein’s released her Lanolin Vitamin Formula with vitamin A.  It would set you back $1.50 for a one month supply and $2.50 for a two month supply. We’ve come a long way since then! Well, whatever your “skin concerns” may look like, there’s probably vitamin for that today.

According to Mary Lupo, MD and professor of dermatology at Tulane University, “the body only delivers only a certain percentage of vitamins to your skin, no matter how much you ingest.” Our bodies do their best, but in order to guarantee that we’re hitting the target, we need to make sure that we help out by putting these vitamins there ourselves.  One of the best ways of doing so is by looking out for certain vitamins in your skin care products.

Vitamin E
Otherwise known as tocopheryl, vitamin E works in several ways to provide antioxidant benefits to the skin.  Although both natural and synthetic forms of the vitamin are beneficial, the natural form is more potent and longer lasting.  Vitamin E helps to protect skin from environmental pollutants and is found often in sunscreen because of its ability to defend skin against UV light.  Pair it with Vitamin C for a one-two punch against aging.

Vitamin B3 is best for reducing redness and boosting hydration. Also known as niacinamide, vitamin B3 increases productions of fatty acids and ceramides, which are both play major roles in the skin’s protective barrier. Says Leslie S. Baumann, MD and director of the University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute, “As that barrier is strengthened, skin is better able to keep moisture in and irritants out.”  The results of one study showed that moisturizers containing B3 tempered the redness caused by rosacea.  In addition, the wonder vitamin interferes with the transfer of pigment to cells in the skin, decreasing the appearance of dark spots.

Also listed as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is a superstar for diminishing  the look of dullness, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and fine lines. Vitamin C is a proven preservative of skin’s resiliency and helps to smooth and firm skin, while evening out skin tone, increasing hydration  and making it visibly more radiant. Retinol
Retinol, or Vitamin A, more commonly, is probably the gold standard of ingredients for skin, providing benefits to combat everything from bumps, rough texture, wrinkles, and fine lines  According to Doris Day, MD and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at University Langone Medical center, “There are more than 700 published studies on retinoids.  They’re tried and true ingredients.  Anyone who wants younger looking skin should use one.”

Vitamin K
If you want younger, brighter looking eyes,  you may want vitamin K. One study concluded that daily use of vitamin K in an eye cream over four months lightened under eye circles significantly, but because of the retinol content in the cream, it was unclear which vitamin was responsible. However, Dr. Berman says the retinol may ease Vitamin K’s ability to be absorbed by skin and prevent darkness.

Connection Between Vitamin B3 and Skin Cancer – Vine Vera Reviews

You know how to take care of your skin. Keep it clean, moisturize and every time you anticipate sun exposure you should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. What you might not know is that you may be able to reduce your risk of skin cancer with a vitamin.

The Study
An Australian study focused on the link between skin cancer and vitamin B3. The deadliest skin cancer is melanoma, and melanoma was not the focus of this study. Rather, this study focused on basal and squamous cell cancers which are two very common forms of skin cancer. Basal and squamous cell skin cancers are very rarely fatal, though they are persistent cancers that can continue to return time and again. The study involved 386 individuals who had suffered from at lest two skin cancer in the previous five years. The 386 people were split into two groups and one group was given 500 milligrams of vitamin B3 to take twice daily while the other group received placebo tablets to take twice daily.

The Results
Participants in this study had to continue vitamin use twice a day for an entire year. Until the very end of the research neither participant nor doctor knew who had been given vitamin B3 and who had been given the placebo. The findings suggest that taking vitamin B3 did reduce the rates of skin cancer. Additionally, vitamin B3 helped reduce the rate of pre-cancerous skin growths known as actinic keratoses.

Participants in the study were followed for an additional six months to see whether the vitamins provided a lasting effect once they were no longer being taken. The research indicated that the return rate of cancers was about equal in both the placebo and vitamin group indicating that in order for the vitamin to be a viable help, it must be taken continuously.

The Implications
Dr. Richard Schilsky of the American Society of Clinical Oncology stated that the study must be taken for what it is and that much more research will be needed. He also noted that Australians have higher rates of skin cancer than nearly anywhere else in the world. However, he did find it encouraging that the nicotinamide, the specific vitamin in B3, could be an alternative to the more costly procedures of removing skin cancers. Because basal and squamous cell skin cancers tend to reappear, the cost of surgery, freezing or radiation can become quite high.

The Australian researchers also warned that this study was not intended to make people with no previous history of basal and squamous cell skin cancers run out to begin taking vitamins. The only research conducted so far was among participants who already had skin cancers. The researchers theorize that nicotinamide is beneficial because it helps to repair the DNA of cells that have been damaged by sun exposure.

While the research is both interesting and hopeful, for the present doctors and skin care experts recommend that you practice safe and sensible skin care habits. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and be sure to reapply frequently. Taking good care of your skin is an important part of keeping your entire body healthy.

Niacinamide is seen as the bio-active version of Vitamin B3. It is generally known to be one of the most powerful ingredients in skin care products. It offers a range of benefits to the skin such as boosting its metabolic rate, regulating tdesquamation and supporting the barrier function of the skin. Niacinamide acts as a precursor for more than 300 enzymatic and chemical reactions in the body and it is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Although studies to determine the various skin care benefits of Niacinamide on the skin are still in full swing, a number of promising results have already been found. According to a study, Niacinamide not only helps in reducing hyper-pigmentation, blotches on the skin and redness, but it is also tolerated by almost all types of skin. This double-blind, placebo controlled study was conducted with a group of 50 women who were aged between 40 – 60. Randomized testing was carried throughout a 12 week time frame and this randomization was done between a moisturizer with 5% Niacinamide concentrations and a moisturizer that did not contain Niacinamide. According to the results of the study, the former solution offered much more noticeable skin effects when compared to the latter.

Another study conducted by the Department of Life Science, University of Seoul, found that the cells that were exposed to Vitamin B3 showed lesser oxidative damage. This makes the results consistent with antioxidants. Other studies have also shown the benefits that Niacinamide has to offer in terms of treating wrinkles and boosting the elasticity of the skin.

Improving the moisture content of your skin – Niacinamide helps to improve skin hydration by strengthening the barrier function of the skin, thereby preventing weight loss. The study showed that about 2% of Niacinamide helped in reducing the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) of the skin by as much as 24% within a period of 4 weeks.
