Your friend tells you that you need to get a skin product that contains retinol, so you search for one on Amazon. You see a few products that fit the description, noticing that some are much cheaper than others. Seeing that they seem to have the same active ingredient, you naturally buy the cheaper one. Upon closer inspection, you see you have bought the cream or lotion formula, and that the more expensive one was a serum. Does it make a difference?

With the overwhelming selection of skincare on the market, it’s hard enough to choose a product with the right ingredients, and now it seems you have the added challenge of choosing the right formula. So, is there a difference between a cream, a lotion, and a serum? Apparently. And you should probably know what it is.

Lotions
Lotions are made of a mix of oil and water and are generally thin and free flowing. That means they can be easily applied to large body parts like legs and arms. Besides oil and water, lotions contain glycerin to keep in moisture, fragrances for an appealing odor, dyes to lend color, and preservatives to increase longevity. Lotions are generally preferred in the summer, because of their cooling sensation, and by eczema sufferers or those whose hairy bodies who call for a formula with a high spreadability factor.

Creams
Also a mix of oil and water, Creams are thicker than lotions, which means they don’t penetrate the skin as easily, although they are absorbed more quickly. This makes them better for applying to areas such as the skin around the eyes to prevent the fluid drip associated with lotions, and also makes them better for applying under clothes in the winter. Like lotions, creams contain glycerin to moisten the skin and also contain preservatives and fragrances. Some contain aloe, which reduces inflammation. Creams containing heavy oil bases are not recommended for facial use.

Lotions Vs. Creams

  • Both are a mix of oil and water that hydrate the skin.
  • Lotions can be more easily applied to larger body parts.
  • Lotions are best for hairy body parts. Creams are best for facial wrinkles and eye areas.

While lotions and creams both come under the category of moisturizers, one is not generally considered superior to another; preference is usually a matter of which is more tailored to your needs. Serums, on the other hand, are generally considered to be of a higher quality and tailored to address more specific needs.

Serums
Serums typically contain active ingredients that you want to penetrate deeply into your skin. This is why you’ll want to apply a serum to your skin immediately after cleansing and before moisturizing or applying sunscreen. They can be used morning and night and, while they will not replace your moisturizer, they may enhance its effects. Serums are made to address a variety of issues. Some contain skin brighteners, others prevent acne, while still others offer anti-aging properties. While they tend to bear a somewhat heftier price tag than creams and lotions, they are also more potent and a small quantity can go a long way. Bottom line: moisturizers are great for hydrating and preventing water loss, but when the going gets tough, it may be time to call in the serum.

While the moon is channeling its inner powers of rejuvenation, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be doing the same. The nighttime is the ideal time for you to bring out your inner eternal Goddess, cleansing and exfoliating away the terrestrial grind and revealing your true heavenly self. Here are some “moon time” beauty habits to help you find your lunar beauty.

Wash Your Face
Resist the temptation to fall into bed without cleansing properly, no matter how tired you are. If you leave makeup on, it will spend the night grinding into your skin, stretching out pores and causing breakouts.

Cosmetic dermatologist Lisa Ginn, MD, advises an oil-based makeup remover which is gentle, and can remove even the most “long lasting” formulas without tugging on skin. Apply the remover to your skin with a cotton pad and follow with a mild cleanser.

Vitamin A
As we age, our skin produces less collagen, which, Ginn says, is the main cause of wrinkles. “If you never stopped making collagen and never damaged collagen, you would never get a wrinkle, your pores would stay small, you’d never get a scar, and your skin would stay nice and tight,” she says. “Collagen is key.”

And how can we keep this precious collagen working for us? Ginn recommends vitamin A which stimulates collagen production, tightening pores, and smoothing fine lines. The doctor recommends applying the vitamin in the form of an over the counter or prescription retinoid nightly. The retinoids also work to lighten brown spots, as an added perk.

Eye Cream
The skin around our eyes is the thinnest of all the skin on our bodies, and becomes thinner with age, making it especially vulnerable to hollowing and under eye circles.

The best treatment for skin repair around the eyes, according to Ginn, is a serum or eye cream with vitamins A, C, E or K. If you choose to use a serum, however, the doctor suggests using a light eye cream in addition to keeping skin moisturized.

Alternate Sleep Sides
Ginn says she can determine which side a person sleeps on by looking ar the lines in her face. While some experts say anti-wrinkle pillows are the solution, Ginn recommends trying to lie on your less favored side. She says that even if you end up reverting to your usual side during the night, you still will have prevented some damage. You can avoid any contact with the pillow by sleeping on your back, if you can manage it.

To keep your piggies lovely, rub your heels and toes with a 12% lactic acid lotion to get rid of dry skin and top with a heavier one, such as one which contains shea butter or glycerin. Cover feet with socks and wake up gorgeous. However, Ginn warns against excessive sock wearing as a possible breeding ground for fungal infection.

Hand Care
The nighttime is the perfect time to slather on that heavy duty hand cream that’s too cumbersome for daily activities. Remember to include your cuticles while you slather.

Humectants

These products are not usually recommended for those with oily skin.

Occlusives
This is known as the ‘Old School’ moisturizer. They work by forming a protective barrier over the epidermis, or outer layer of skin, that water is not able to get through. Water on the skin can actually dry the skin out, and these types of moisturizers also prevent water from escaping the skin as well. You might know an occlusive in the form of petroleum jelly, more commonly known by the brand name, Vaseline. These types of occlusives can cut TEWL by up to 98% and therefore, are very effective. They can tend to have a thick, greasy feel, however; and therefore, aren’t practical to cover yourself in – which is why they are generally used for target specific areas, and mainly used at night time nowadays. These products are generally geared towards those with severe dry skin, or to those with aging skin.

Emollients
Emollients are meant to penetrate the skins layers, creating softer, smoother skin which feels better hydrated and more supple. They are able to be absorbed by the skin, filling in the gaps and areas where proteins have broken down within the skin’s cells, providing long lasting moisture and a more flexible feel. Emollients work well for most skin types – even oily and greasy skin. You can find many different types and lotions labeled under the emollient category on your favorite drug store’s shelves for purchase. Most body lotions contain emollients.
