Healthy Drink Choices

Don’t like water? You’re not alone. Sure, you know water is one of the best things you can put in your body, that your body is comprised mostly of water, that it helps you lose weight, and flushes toxins from your system, but the bottom line is: you don’t like it, and given the choice, you would probably never drink it. The good news is; you don’t have to. While the eight glasses a day rule is still the way to go, there are other ways to stay hydrated if you simply can’t bring yourself to gulp down the H20. Here are some liquids that provide hydration, and some other nutrients, too, when you’re thirsty for something a little more interesting than water.

Pomegranate Juice
Pomegranate has been getting a lot of buzzes lately for the antioxidant kick it packs. Research has shown the juice may prevent heart disease, cancer, and inflammation.

Low Fat Milk
Although there has been something of an anti dairy backlash lately, low-fat milk is still considered a healthy option. It’s an excellent source of vitamin D, calcium, protein, and other micronutrients essential for your health. Low-fat varieties are better choices because they have a lower saturated fat content than whole milk.

Green Tea
Green Tea may be a better choice than coffee when it comes to that daily kick. Green tea is packed with energizing nutrients and antioxidants, and just enough caffeine to get you going without the midday crash.

Orange Juice
While most versions on the market are processed with sugar, not much beats a cup of fresh squeezed OJ to start your morning off on the rich foot. The vitamin C and quercetin in orange juice has been associated with the relief of seasonal allergies, so you’ll want to keep your juicer on hand when pollen season comes around.

Beet Juice
It may not be the easiest thing to find in grocery stores, but if you can find a juice bar that serves beet juice, it may be worth making the extra effort. Beet juice can lower blood pressure, increase blood flow to the brain, to slow the progression of dimension, and keep your liver health with high magnesia, iron, and calcium levels.

Hot Chocolate
Perhaps the most sinful beverage on the list thus far, the high magnesium level in cocoa is a great way to soothe menstrual cramps. However, it comes with a price. In order to get the magnesium, you’ll need to make your own. Just mix hot chocolate with raw cocoa powder, and add almond milk, honey or maple syrup, if it needs some extra sweetness.

Kale Juice
Drinking your veggies still a strange concept to you? Kale is packed with minerals and vitamins that help with everything from bowel regulation to bone health. Again, you’re best off rolling up your sleeves and making your kale juice in the comfort of your own kitchen. Bottled varieties tend to pack in the sodium.

Foods That Are Killing your Complexion

You look in the mirror, and there it is: a new zit. You do a quick mental inventory of the foods you’ve eaten in the last few days to determine the culprit, but it doesn’t take you long to determine; it’s that candy bar you ate the other day. How you tried to forget about that dietary blunder. You didn’t even list it in your food journal. But now, here it is, getting its revenge in the form of a large pimple that will probably taunt you for the next two weeks.

You know that you are what you eat and your skin is one of the biggest reminders. Although some foods are hard to resist, pimples are a high price to pay. But, forewarned is forearmed. So, in the spirit of forewarning, here are some foods that may be causing those complexion killers.

Canned Soup
Although it may make a cheap, quick lunch, canned soup contains bisphenol and sodium which can make skin retain water, causing it to become dry, swollen, and inflamed. Bone broth is a gut soothing option which can help to heal the stomach lining without making your skin break out in the process.

Processed Carbohydrates
Processed carbohydrates include all those foods we love like white bread, cereals, and baked goods. Unfortunately, these dietary staples break down and transform into sugar, which is bad news for your health and your skin. Seed and almond flour crackers are low in sugar and high in fiber and may save you from acne woes.

Juice
Another high-sugar bandit, juice is no friend to the acne-prone. Try a high protein smoothie with healthy fats instead.

Canned Tuna
While it may be accessible and cost effective, canned tuna may not be your healthiest seafood option. Dr. Lipman says, “It lacks the nutrients found in wild fish and is often farmed, causing mercury toxicity. ” Canned wild salmon is a safer source of omega-3s and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Pizza eaters be warned. According to Dr. Frank Lipman, MD, “Dairy is a brilliant trigger for skin issues like acne, as all dairy products come from lactating organic cows. Organic cows are filled with cow’s hormones, which can trigger hormonal acne in humans.” If you can, try replacing the dreaded zit inducer with lactose free cashew cheese or nutritional yeast, although they may not work as well as mozzarella on pizza.

Soda
Soda is a veritable cocktail of skin no no’s, from its high sugar level to its chemical content. Soda increases insulin levels and can interfere with the production of healthy bacteria. The result? A plethora of skin issuers ranging from eczema and rosacea to acne. Kombucha is a probiotic rich alternative, which would be a less “inflammatory” option.

Coffee
Caffeine in coffee can dehydrate skin. If you can sacrifice the jolt, consuming hot water with a hint of lemon can hydrate skin and reduce inflammation.

Some may say that the popularity of home juicers and food processors have brought out a bit of the mad scientist in us. Increasingly, the question seems to be not what you can put into these new contraptions, but what you can’t. Indeed, something in these new kitchen innovations have awakened our inner eighth grader, leaving very little off limits. Among the more eyebrow-raising to meet their fates in the juicer: cereal grasses, cucumbers, celery, potatoes and now, a new addition to the list; cabbage.

Why cabbages, you might ask? They don’t seem to be too high on anyone’s favorite food list, and even smell a little funny, but it turns out, cabbages can do the body a surprising amount of good.

Cabbage is low in saturated fats and cholesterol and is also rich in vitamins such as B6, C, K, and folate. It also has a high fiber content and contains protein, calcium, phosphorous, and omega -6 fatty acids. However, it is not the nutritional content of cabbage that makes it so impressive, rather it is the health benefits.

Fights Cancer
Cabbage juice contains isocyanate, known for its ability to prevent great, stomach, prostate, lung and colon cancer. It also contains sulforaphane, which blocks carcinogens. For these reasons, it is often prescribed to patients recovering from cancer.

In addition to having cancer-fighting properties, cabbage juice is also effective in controlling peptic ulcers. The juice of the cruciferous veggie contains glutamine, which is a type of amino acid associated with the promotion of cellular growth it the stomach, and may aid in helping peptic ulcers to repair itself.

Because cabbage juice is beneficial to the digestive system, it is known to aid in weight loss, converting sugar and carbs into energy, rather than fat.

Heart Disease
Cabbage contains omega -6 fatty acids. Although once believed to block arteries, the American Heart Association has now found Omega-6s to be heart healthy and recommends that individuals get 5-10% go their daily calorie intake from these fatty acids.

Fights Anemia
Anemia is characterized by a decrease in red blood cells in the bloodstream, resulting in feelings of fatigue and exhaustion. The folic acid in cabbage juice has been shown to help generate new red blood cells vital to anemia sufferers. Cabbage is also rich in Vitamin C, which assists in the body’s absorption of iron.

Skin Care
Cabbages are rich in phytochemicals, like alpha and beta-carotene and contain the retinol equivalent of vitamin A. The antioxidant properties in these nutrients cam destroy free radicals that damage skin cells and age skin and are probably a better source of skincare than many products available on the market today.

Foods That Prevent Breakouts

So you really did it. Last night, you were watching SNL and you heard the siren’s call of the Ben and Jerry’s fudge core ice cream and you went to town. You walked over to the freezer- one person, one spoon, one mission: to eat the whole thing. And that’s exactly what you did, and now you’re staring at it. That big old zit -right in the middle of your forehead.

You heard that food doesn’t cause acne, hormones do, and you believe it, but every time you eat chocolate, there it is, the huge pimple serving to remind you and your friends how you spent your Saturday night for the rest of the week. If only you could undo it! Well, acne sufferers, while food may not cause acne, some foods may actually prevent it? While there is no evidence that you can make that pimple go away by gorging on the following, there is some proof that certain foods can lead to clearer skin.

1. Flaxseed Or Fish
Not to be confused with omega-6 fatty acids which can cause inflammation, omega-3 fatty acids can actually reduce inflammation and reduce acne breakouts. Omega-3 can be found in flaxseed, walnuts, and fatty fish.

Green tea contains the powerful antioxidant EGCG. Researchers in South Korea applied an EGCG containing cream to rabbit ears and found it decreased the size of the sebaceous glands, which are commonly enlarged in acne sufferers. The antioxidant also was proven to reduce the production of sebum. A follow-up study on humans found that EGCG noticeably improved acne in a split face, 8-week trial. If drinking green tea throughout the day seems a bit challenging, try applying cool, moist tea bags or a green tea moistened cloth to affected areas for 10-15 minutes.

3. Oysters
Good for more than one thing, it seems. Oysters contain zinc, a mineral that has been shown in studies to reduce acne. It is recommended that acne sufferers get zinc from food rather than supplements, which can provide more that 100 mg of zinc per day, a dosage which may result in side effects. You are best off getting your zinc from oysters, veal liver, roast beef, roasted squash and pumpkin seeds, dried watermelon seeds and toasted wheat germ.

Juicing is the new black, and it can also clear up your acne. Dark, leafy green veggies, found in some juices, contain beta-carotenes which are anti-inflammatory and help reduce oil while clearing toxins to form the body.

5. Probiotics
Mostly known for their ability to reduce inflammation in the gut, it has now been hypothesized that probiotics may also reduce acne. Research has proven that those who suffered from reactions to toxins found in the gut were also likely to display acne symptoms. Because, prebiotics and probiotics are effective in fighting oxidative stress and inflammation, scientists think that they may also be effective against acne. Probiotics are most often found in kefir, sauerkraut, dark chocolate, miso soup, pickles, tempeh, and yogurt.
