Using Baking Soda For Common Beauty Fixes

What are your baking soda associations? Do you remember the ever present box in the refrigerator wedged permanently behind the cheese wheel during your formative years? Do you remember it as adhesive you used to make your brother into a mummy for Halloween before you realized he would eventually need to use the bathroom? Do you remember brushing your teeth with it before the popularity of teeth whitening? Or do you just remember wondering who the arm and hammer belonged to and what an arm and hammer had to do with baking soda?

Whatever your fond memories of baking soda, you probably know that there’s very little this cakey powder can’t do. Here’s how you can use baking soda for common beauty fixes.

If big hair is important to you, you’re probably no stranger to buildup from serums, sprays, and mousses leaving hair feeling sticky and looking lifeless. Just sprinkle a coin sized amount of baking soda into your shampoo. Wash and rinse and embrace the freedom.

When it comes to high sodium and high-calorie foods, tv dinners and fast food probably top the list. If you’re trying to cut down on the bad stuff, here’s a few foods you may want to avoid.

Reasons For High Sodium Content
Processed food like frozen dinners, snacks, and pizza are usually high in sodium to satisfy the American taste for salty food. Foods without salt are generally bland and salt is easier to get and cheaper to use than other herbs, spices, and flavoring. Salt can also act as a preservative. When high sodium is combined with high calories, you have a literal recipe for disaster.

Surely, this will come as a shocker. With a name like Quaker Oats, you wouldn’t expect one cup of their “Simply Granola” to contain 420 calories, and 10 grams of fat (1 saturated) and 26 sugars. One cup is equivalent to 3 servings of Cookie Crisps!

Fast Food Burgers
Considering their highly caloric reputation, it should be little wonder that the Carl’s Jr. 1/2 Pound Thickburger El Diablo comes in at a whopping 1380 calories, 92 grams of fat, and 3,830 mg of sodium. That’s three-quarter of the recommended daily calorie intake!

Just when you thought there were no more ways to fit more fat and calories into a pizza, check out the Sbarro Stuffed Sausage and Pepperoni pizza. One slice of this will earn you 810 calories, 40 grams of fat and a shocking 2,180 mgs of sodium. This oily shell of bread holds together a hot mess of cheese, sausage, and pepperoni topped by more of the same. If you’re looking for a better option, think thin crust and veggies.

Cheese Whiz
Sorry, bachelors, it looks like convenience comes with a price. Only two tablespoons of this stuff gives you 91 calories, 7 grams of fat, 4g saturated, and 541 mgs sodium. Considering that’s probably enough to get you through two crackers, that’s a lot of bad news for your heart.

Its probably no surprise to find out that Hungry Man Selects aren’t exactly considered health food. Their classic fried chicken dinner consist of fried chicken, corn, mashed potatoes, a brownie, 940 calories, 56 grams of fat and 1.370 mgs of sodium. That’s almost as many calories as five servings of Chicken McNuggets, 57% of the daily sodium recommendation and 86% daily fat. You’re better off with the Fisher Price version.

Stop the Cycle
If you’ve seen “Seinfeld”, you may be familiar with the episode in which Elaine begins to get so used to eating birthday cake and her office, that she develops a midday craving for sugar. Although experts generally do not give credence to the notion of a sugar addiction, there is research that shows that sugar can have an effect on the part of the brain that responds alcohol and drugs.

Start by eliminating desserts with high sugar and fat content. After at least 3 days, they will taste much better. You will find yourself beginning to reestablish a taste for healthier fare.

Reprogram Your Tummy
While you were putting a healthy diet on the back burner, your stomach’s natural appetite control systems may have, well, lost control. Normally a full belly sends signals to your brain to let it know you’re full. However, overeating for prolonged time periods makes the receptors less sensitive.

You may think the solution relies in cutting down on the amount of food, but this will only send a signal to the brain that you are starving and need food immediately, which is why you sometimes become unexplainably hungry after a night of binging. A better solution is to eat healthy sized portions of high fiber, low calorie foods which will quiet the receptors and keep you feeling satisfied.

Favorite Comfort Soup Recipes

Soup is the ultimate comfort nosh, having nostalgic and sentimental value across all cultures. Comfort foods are known to increase positive emotions and relieve negative psychological effects. Here are some comfort soup recipes to keep you feeling positive this holiday season.

Clam seafood soup
Grandma’s Seafood Chowder Recipe 

1. Heat 3 tablespoons of butter in a 6 qt. stack pot over medium high heat. Add one lb of sliced mushrooms, cook and stir 8-10 minutes until tender, Remove from pot.

2. In the same pot, heat 1/4 cup butter over medium heat. Stir in 1/3 cup all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper until smooth; whisk in 4 cups of half and half cream and 1- 1/2 cups 2% milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir 2-3 minutes or until thick.

3. Stir in one pound haddock fillets with the skin removed cut into 1″ pieces, 1 pound peeled uncooked medium shrimp, 2 cups frozen peas and sautéed mushrooms. Cook for 5-7 minutes or until fish begins to flake and shrimp turns pink. Add cup 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 1 pound lump crab meat and a jar of diced pimientos. Stir until cheese in melted. Sprinkle serving with paprika. Yield: 10 servings (3 1/4 quarts.)

Creamy Tomato Soup Recipe 

1. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 cloves of minced garlic, and 1 chopped medium onion and cook about 5 minutes, until onions are translucent. Add 2 tablespoons brown sugar and 12 large chopped tomatoes and cook for five more minutes. Add 1/2 cup water, 4 sprigs fresh thyme and 1 piece parmesan rind (optional.) Cook for 25 minutes.

2. Discard the thyme sprigs and Parmesan rind. Puree the soup in a food processor until smooth, Strain through a fine sieve over a cleaned saucepan. Stir in 1/4 cup 35% cream and 2 tablespoons butter.

3. Ladle the soup into bowls and sprinkle with grated parmesan and fresh chives. Enjoy!

 Italian Sausage Soup

Italian Sausage Soup Recipe 

1. Brown 1 pound Italian Sausage with one clove minced garlic in a stockpot or Dutch oven. Stir in 2 14-oz cans of beef broth, 1 14.5 oz can of Italian- style tomatoes, and 1 cup sliced carrots. Season with !/4 teaspoon ground black pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Reduce heat, cover and let simmer for 15 minutes.

2. Stir in 1 14.5 oz can great Northern beans, undrained, and 2 small zucchini, cubed. Cover, and simmer another 15 minutes or until zucchini is tender.

3. Remove from heat and add 2 cups of spinach, packed, rinsed and torn. Replace lid and allow the heat from the soup to cook the spinach leaves. The soup will be ready to serve after 5 minutes.

Signs That You’re Using the Wrong Product

We all want the lotion, cream, or serum to be the one that leaves your skin rejuvenated, wrinkle- free and beautiful, but sometimes, you just need to walk away. Here are some signs that the skin product you’re using may not be the right one for you.

You’ve Got Rashes
While rashes can be caused by a variety of things, they can sold be symptoms of an allergic reaction to a cosmetic product. Beauty formulas can contain inactive ingredients that can contribute to the look and smell of the product, but these ingredients can be allergenic and cause irritating skin rashes. Dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse says, “Consider getting allergy patch testing at your dermatologist office to determine the offending agent and them you’ll know which ingredients to look out for in the future.”

You’ve Got Hives
If you’ve been noticing red welts popping up on you’re skin, it may be hives, Hives are another sign that you may be having a negative reaction to your beauty products. Certified aesthetician Heather Wilson, explains, “People can be allergic to ingredients in a skin care product, so hives can definitely occur. Unfortunately, this doesn’t means the product wrong for your skin type or concern, but that the reaction is a sign that you should discontinue the product, most likely due to an allergen.”

Your Skin Is Oily
If you’re not prone to oily skin, but begin to notice increased excess moisture on your skin, it may be the effect of the product you are using. Harsh cleansers can strip the natural oils from the skin, causing it to go into a repair mode, producing oil to make up for the damage. Wilson recommends decreasing the amount of oil absorbing skin care products within your routine and looking for, “serums and gel cream moisturizers that are infused with hyaluronic acid, which provides hydration without adding oil.”

Your Skin Is Dry and Peeling
Peels and face washes can contain strong acids that are harsh on the skin. New York dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. says, “If your skin is peeling too much, you’re probably using too many acids. Don’t combine alpha-hydroxy acids with salicylic acids and retinol. One acid may be enough.”

You Notice Brown Spots
Brown spots are usually the result of long term sun exposure. If you are using a sunscreen product, but are still noticing brown spots, it may be time to look for a new sunscreen. Dr. Jaliman says, “If you’re getting brown spots on your face and uneven pigment, maybe your sunscreen isn’t giving you broad-spectrum protection, Choose SPF 30 or above with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.”

Your Face Burns
Although some products may cause a tingling sensation, they should not cause a painful burning. Some products can be too strong for sensitive skin. Dr Jaliman cites certain anti aging products which contain strong retinoids with ingredients that can cause a stinging sensation. “If your skin is burning on application of a retinol,” says the doctor, “talk to your dermatologist about changing to a gentler anti aging ingredient like vitamin C or resveratrol.”

Apparently, some consider the hungover look a badge of honor. In the latest trends hitting Japan, women are actually deliberately simulating under eye circles and red puffy skin in an effort to look as if they were, well, recovering from a rough night. This trend, known as “byojaku,” or “sickly” is cropping up magazine covers in the Eastern hemisphere and is beginning to infiltrate western culture as well in the form of YouTube tutorials instructing young women to go heavy on red blush under the eyes and even providing information on creating puffy eye bags with shading and tape.

While this may have a limited appeal, most of us still seem to prefer looking rested. If you are among the many who still value the results of a good night’s sleep, read on for tried and true methods for achieving it.

Use Silk or Satin Pillowcases
Not only will these fibers prevent you waking up with eggbeater hair, they will also soften fine lines and wrinkles. Silk and satin cause less friction between your skin and the pillowcase than other rougher materials. Says Jesleen Ahluwalia, MD, “Silk is easier on hair-it helps avoid tangles and breakage. It’s also better for the skin because the material glides easily and prevents creasing and wrinkles.”

Sleep On Your Back
If you can avoid crawling into fetal position every night, you may be able to stop wrinkles before they start to form. According to Ahluwalia, ” a person who sleeps on one side may even have more set in wrinkles on that particular side compared to the other.” Elizabeth Tanzi, MD advises using an extra pillow for elevation, warning that, “When you lie flat fluid can gather around your eyes.”

We all know the importance of proper moisturization. Look for a night cream with hyaluronic acid to attract water to skin and smooth wrinkles. Dr. Deborah Jaliman, a New York City dermatologist also recommends an application of lip balm before going to bed and moisturizing eyelashes with lash conditioner to get the maximum benefit from the nightly “repair cycle of the skin.”

Sleep with a Humidifier
Hydration is a crucial component in keeping skin healthy and a humidifier is a crucial component in nightly hydration. This is especially important in the drying season of winter.

Change Pillowcases
Chicago makeup artist Alle Connell instructs you to, “Wash your pillowcases frequently so you’re not resting your lovely skin on top of bacteria nests for eight hours a night.” Dr. Ahluwalia also recommends changing pillow cases two times a week and flipping pillows regularly.

Keep Hair Our of Your Face
The oil from your hair can wreak nightly havoc on your complexion, but pulling it up too tightly can cause hair to break. While Connell suggests wrapping hair in a scarf, Ahluwalia says a loose, high ponytail is the way to go.

Have you ever heard the expression, “It’s all fun and games until someone gets a zit?” No? Well, truer words were probably never spoken. Have you been living the high life, staggering out of bed sometime in the mid afternoon to a “breakfast” of last night’s pizza washed down by soda? Did you overdo it at the bar last night? Did you have to go to MacDonald’s because you forget to go to the supermarket? We all know the devil-may-care attitude can be fun- until you look in the mirror. Your skin is probably the first part of you to show the effects of a less than healthy lifestyle, but never fear, with a few temporary dietary changes, you could be back on the road to beautiful skin in no time.

Although for years we have been attributing our acne breakouts to it, chocolate is now being hailed as a superfood for your skin and health in general. Cocoa provides hydration to the skin, making it more supple and firm. Dr. David Bank, MD, says. Nicholas Perricone, MD and NYC dermatologist adds, “Dark chocolate contains high levels of flavonols, a potent type of antioxidant.” To get the maximum dose of flavanol, make sure your chocolate is at least 70% cacao.” L.A. dermatologist Jessica Wu says, “When applied topically, the caffeine in chocolate may temporarily reduce skin puffiness.” Is that bar in your mouth yet?

Greek yogurt

Anyone for froyo? Dr. Wu says the protein found in dairy makes skin more resistant to wrinkles. DR. Wu recommends Greek Yogurt as your yogurt of choice saying that, “The protein content is often double that of regular yogurt.”

Sunflower Seeds
Crack open the vitamin E and protect your skin’s top layers from sun damage. A daily handful will provide a high content of essential fatty acids and sunflower seed oil can also relieve parched lip and heels.

Dr. Perricone says pomegranates are packed with polyphenol antioxidants that fight free radicals and relate blood flow to the skin, making it rosy. To get results, eat one fruit or a few glasses of its juice every day. Pomegranates can also be applied topically to moisturize and smooth fine lines.

Peppers help your peepers! Dr. Wu says, “Women who eat green and yellow vegetables regularly tend to have fewer wrinkles, especially around the eyes.” The carotenoids in yellow and orange vegetables are also great for reducing skin’s sun sensitivity. Try for two cups daily for a crisp, tangy skin booster.

Understanding Food Intolerance

Trudy’s McCulloch’s digestive problems began at birth. As a baby, she suffered from bouts of diarrhea and gas, but managed to have a relatively healthy childhood. However, by the time she hit puberty, she started suffering symptoms that caused her eyes to seal shut with crust and her sinuses and head to throb with pain, but, as she says, “The worst part was the fatigue.” None of the doctors she consulted could understand why she was so tired. “I began to think it was in my head.” When she hit her 20’s chronic chest and stomach pain kicked in to the point where she thought she was “having a heart attack. My left arm was numb and I was short of breath.”

It wasn’t until 2004 when Trudy was in her 30’s that she and her family finally discovered the source of all of his. Trudy had multiple food intolerances which caused GERD ( gastroesphogeal reflux disease) and brought on the intolerable chest pain and sinus problems. Food intolerance is often misdiagnosed and can go untreated for several years, causing undue pain, misery, and frustration to the sufferer and his or her loved ones.

What does food intolerance look like?
Food intolerance can appear:

  1. On the skin, in the form of eczema, acne or skin rashes
  2. In the digestive tract as cramping, diarrhea, mouth ulcers, bloating, or constipation
  3. In the respiratory tract as sneezing, coughing nasal congestion, or asthma
  4. In cognitive ability and emotions, such as brain fog, headache, anxiety, insomnia or depression
  5. As an ear infection or as arthritis

How do you figure out which food is affecting you?
If you have a food intolerance, what is healthy for most Americans may not be healthy for you. Intolerance can be brought on by an immune response to a certain food, often caused by a protein or from deficient digestive enzymes.

Dairy products
Lactose Intolerance

The three macronutrients in the food we eat are protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Dairy products contain all three. Lactose is the sugar found in milk. If you are lactose intolerant, the enzyme you need to break down lactose is missing and your gut will not be a be able to absorb the sugar. The sugar molecule, not having been broken down by the proper enzymes, then moves through the gut allowing gut bacteria to feast upon it. This leads to gas, cramping, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. If you believe you are lactose intolerant, drink raw dairy to help with digestion, supplement with enzymes, and eat fermented dairy which contains almost no lactose, examples include yogurt and kefir.

Food intolerance can occur at a very early age. It can appear when babies do not develop an immune response against certain foods. This often happens if the baby is fed on formula and does not receive the good bacteria and immune signals found in breast milk. In these cases, the immune system will react to almost any food as an invader, or “antigen” and will react every time it is found in the body.

When the intolerance is related to an immune response cross -reactivity may occur. This is when the immune system comes across a protein that is similar to a different food and reacts to this food as if it were the original antigen. This often happens to those with a gluten sensitivity. People who are sensitive to the proteins in gluten will also respond adversely to coffee and milk protein. Unfortunately, if you are cross-reactive, the treatment of gluten sensitivity may not be effective, and you should seek appropriate testing.

Perhaps you have seen “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.” The 1997 movie starred Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as two shallow thirty-somethings who reinvent themselves as brilliant business women in the hope of impressing the attendees of their high school reunion. The movie is chock full of quotable quotes, mostly concerned with the superficiality of the women who put too much emphasis on appearance and not enough emphasis on what counts. Such quotes include, “Did you deduct 16 pounds for your shoes?” and, “When I made my first million, my present to myself was a new face,” and, “I’m sorry I forgot my top.” But one priceless gem that sticks out among others came out of Romy’s mouth when she gives her insights on nutrition: “Actually, I have been trying this new fat-free diet I invented. All I had to eat for the past six days are gummy bears, jelly beans, and candy corns.” Beware, Romy, your fat-free diet is a perfect recipe for skin inflammation.

What Are the Effects Of Sugar?
When you eat sugary foods, a.k.a. high glycerin foods, your insulin levels go up and create a burst of inflammation in your body. This, in turn, breaks down collagen and elastin. This horrifying process is called glycation which can cause skin to sag and wrinkles to appear. Glycation can cause weak cracking, skin that takes a long time to heal, exacerbating conditions like acne, psoriasis , psoriasis and rosacea.

Stay Below the Sugar Limits
According to the World Health Organization, free sugar intake should make up less than 10% of your total calorie intake. Reductions to below 5% per day (six teaspoons) are even more beneficial. Free sugar refers the monsaccharides and disaccharides added to food or sugar naturally occurring in syrups fruit juices, honey and syrup.

While it is obvious that Romy’s all-candy diet was a recipe for instant glycation, there are some less obvious offenders. Sugar is in everything from dressing to sauces to chips to crackers and beyond. To prevent the unconscious intake of sugar, read the labels on everything your eating to check sugar levels and remember to adjust for serving size.

Stay Away from Liquid Sugar
Beware! Those “healthy” smoothies you’ve been inhaling for breakfast each day may be the source of your complexion woes. An average smoothie, about 32 oz, can contain 30 grams of sugar! Because liquids go down more easily then food, we are less likely to keep track of the quantity we consume. The best solution? Stop drinking soda, lemonade , shakes, sweet teas, juices and, sadly, those beloved smoothies.

Cut Down On Fruit
Yes, even our trusted fruit can betray us. Just one large naval orange can contain 23 grams of sugar! Dried fruit and processed fruit, such as are found in smoothies and juices, are also high in glucose. If you suffer inflammation, you may want to stick to one low sugar fruit per day. The best choices are berries.

Stay Away from High Glycemic Foods
Simple carbohydrates, while easily absorbed by the body can cause a spike in insulin and lead to inflammation and glycation, The faster your body can absorb a food, the faster it raises your blood sugar. Most processed foods are highly glycemic because they lack fats, fibers and proteins that make foods more difficult to absorb.
