Foods That Are Killing your Complexion

You look in the mirror, and there it is: a new zit. You do a quick mental inventory of the foods you’ve eaten in the last few days to determine the culprit, but it doesn’t take you long to determine; it’s that candy bar you ate the other day. How you tried to forget about that dietary blunder. You didn’t even list it in your food journal. But now, here it is, getting its revenge in the form of a large pimple that will probably taunt you for the next two weeks.

You know that you are what you eat and your skin is one of the biggest reminders. Although some foods are hard to resist, pimples are a high price to pay. But, forewarned is forearmed. So, in the spirit of forewarning, here are some foods that may be causing those complexion killers.

Canned Soup
Although it may make a cheap, quick lunch, canned soup contains bisphenol and sodium which can make skin retain water, causing it to become dry, swollen, and inflamed. Bone broth is a gut soothing option which can help to heal the stomach lining without making your skin break out in the process.

Processed Carbohydrates
Processed carbohydrates include all those foods we love like white bread, cereals, and baked goods. Unfortunately, these dietary staples break down and transform into sugar, which is bad news for your health and your skin. Seed and almond flour crackers are low in sugar and high in fiber and may save you from acne woes.

Juice
Another high-sugar bandit, juice is no friend to the acne-prone. Try a high protein smoothie with healthy fats instead.

Canned Tuna
While it may be accessible and cost effective, canned tuna may not be your healthiest seafood option. Dr. Lipman says, “It lacks the nutrients found in wild fish and is often farmed, causing mercury toxicity. ” Canned wild salmon is a safer source of omega-3s and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Pizza eaters be warned. According to Dr. Frank Lipman, MD, “Dairy is a brilliant trigger for skin issues like acne, as all dairy products come from lactating organic cows. Organic cows are filled with cow’s hormones, which can trigger hormonal acne in humans.” If you can, try replacing the dreaded zit inducer with lactose free cashew cheese or nutritional yeast, although they may not work as well as mozzarella on pizza.

Soda
Soda is a veritable cocktail of skin no no’s, from its high sugar level to its chemical content. Soda increases insulin levels and can interfere with the production of healthy bacteria. The result? A plethora of skin issuers ranging from eczema and rosacea to acne. Kombucha is a probiotic rich alternative, which would be a less “inflammatory” option.

Coffee
Caffeine in coffee can dehydrate skin. If you can sacrifice the jolt, consuming hot water with a hint of lemon can hydrate skin and reduce inflammation.

Choosing the Right Cleanser

You are choosing your new facial cleanser. This is a big deal for you.  You’ ve had some very good experiences and some very bad ones. The good ones have been positively life changing and confidence boosting.  The bad ones have made you want to stay home and cry.

You decide to look at reviews.  Oh, the cleanser looks good.  It got 4.5 stars and 3070 customer reviews.  You look at the breakdown. 73% gave it five stars, that’s pretty good, but 5% gave it one star and 4% gave it two stars.  What if you’re in the 5%? Unfortunately, you really won’t know until you buy it and use it, but here are a few helpful guidelines.

The Right Cleanser For Your Skin Type
Bar soaps are generally considered bad for skin because they contain harsh detergents that strip everything from your skin, even things you don’t want to be stripped.  However, if bar soaps are the way you want to roll, gentle bar soaps like Dove Beauty Bar is fine for your skin, although it is not really a soap.  Since they do tend to be drying,  bar soaps would be a better choice for people with oily skin.

Foaming
Foaming cleansers also have a drying effect and are better for people with oily skin.  Since you only need a small amount to work up a good lather, foaming cleansers last the longest.  You may want to avoid a foaming cleanser if you have dry or irritated skin, as they may be too drying for you. However, foaming cleansers are available in gel or cream  and the cream forms may contain oils and emollients that may be less harsh.

Non-Foaming
Nonfoaming cleansers are usually recommended for people with sensitive skin or eczema.  These cleansers are available in lotion and gel forms and are known to be a little gentler; some say too gentle.  Nonfoaming cleansers have often been blamed for being unable to remove sunscreen and makeup.  However, many people swear by gels like Cetaphil, which is known for its suitability to sensitive skin.  It is also good for dry skin and in the morning.

Ingredients
When you do buy a new cleanser, you should definitely check the ingredient list.  Sodium lauryl sulfate can be quite drying, whereas sodium Laureth sulfate is milder and gentler, although it may irritate some people.  However, keep in mind that if the ingredients are listed toward the bottom of the list, the amount may be negligible.

Keep in mind that some people use two different cleansers. They may use lighter cleansers during the winter when skin is dry, and stronger cleansers in the humid summer months.  Some use Lighter cleansers in the morning and stronger cleansers in the evening, when they need to bring in the heavy duty.

In parting, Yancy Lael, author of Glowing:  Soulful Skincare says, “don’t rely on labels to give you the information you need.  Trust only the ingredient list in your gut.”  This may be the soundest advice of all.

You’ll hear all kinds of tips and tricks that are supposed to give you flawless skin, but prove to be nothing but duds when put to the test. Don’t worry, though, because we’ve got your back. We’ve compiled a list of tested, proven ways to get the beautiful, glowing skin you want, no myths, no lies, no nonsense. Only the ones that actually work. For best results, do as many of these as possible.

Skincare
Of course, direct care for your skin is one of the most necessary and vital components to achieving and maintaining radiant skin. Certainly, it’s not the only thing to keep in mind, but it’s one of the most important. Make sure to exfoliate regularly. The dead skin cells on the surface of your epidermis will come off eventually, sure, but if you want to avoid dullness and encourage radiance, weekly or twice-weekly exfoliation is best.

Make sure your daytime moisturizer has SPF, as well, specifically broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. After all, few things are less radiant than skin cancer. You may also wish to use a night cream with retinol in it, to soften your skin and help prevent wrinkles. Finally, just remember to experiment to find what works best for you, personally. Everyone is different, and everyone’s skin is different. What works for someone else may not work for you. Keep trying until you find the perfect products for you.

While covering up your flaws with makeup isn’t necessarily the healthiest solution, “fake it ’till you make it” definitely applies here. After all, changes to the skin itself take time. While you’re waiting for your revamped skincare routine to kick in, you can use makeup to compensate in the meantime.

Dabbing and blending highlighter along your jawline, with a careful, steady hand, can certainly help. Using illuminating and radiance-boosting foundation can also go a great deal. Play around and find what works for you.

Remember to Catch Some Zs
Sleep! No, seriously, sleep deprivation makes your skin look dull and unflattering. It’s not called beauty rest for nothing. Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night. If you’re getting less than seven (or more than nine—oversleeping is bad too) reevaluate your sleep habits and make changes to your schedule if necessary.

Remember how we said skincare is one of the most important means to achieving glowing skin? Well, the other most important aspect is probably nutrition. That old adage “you are what you eat” is actually pretty accurate on a number of fronts, including your skin. Make sure you bring your water bottle to work with you so you don’t forget to drink before lunch- getting dehydrated in the morning can zap your energy as well as your skin. Coffee in the morning will only dehydrate you! Making a conscious effort to drink water throughout the day can do a lot for your skin.

Try Out Some Vitamin C
There are so many products on the market right now in every price range that are formulated with vitamin C. Because it is an antioxidant, these products can prevent skin damage on a cellular level, and promote radiance and health! Vitamin C products also normally have a great citrus smell that can perk you up in the morning!

Use a Hyaluronic Acid Mask
There is no better way to keep skin hydrated and maintain its elasticity! Using an overnight hyaluronic mask will make your skin look smooth, plump, and healthy!

Get Serious About Your Sun Protection
Wearing sunscreen on your face every day is the best way to prevent skin damage. Sun damage can make your skin dry and uneven, plus it causes premature aging, so commit to using a moisturizer with SPF 30 every day. Top it with a foundation with SPF for even more protection. If you want a little color this summer, stick with bronzing primers and glowy powders!

Pack on the Glow!
Now that strobing is popular, there are tons of products out there that will give you a glowing, radiant look.
