The French Paradox: The Benefits of Resveratrol

In the early 1990s, the popular news series 60 Minutes investigated the phenomena known as the French Paradox. This term describes the relatively low rate of coronary heart disease among the French population, even though the people there are known for eating a diet that includes a high amount of fatty foods, particularly dairy and meats such as butter, red meat and various high-cream cheeses like brie. This causes a paradox, as often fatty foods high in saturated fats that are found in dairy and meat are held responsible for higher cholesterol, clogged arteries and other health problems here in the United States.

It turns out that red wine, which is a commonplace beverage in the overall French diet, contains a powerful antioxidant known as Resveratrol that is found in the skins of red grapes.
